What trains are running on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 2017 travel advice | Travel News | Travel

Travelling by train during the festive period can be difficult with engineering works and cancelled trains.

For anyone wanting to travel on Christmas Day 2017, no train lines are currently running.

Cross Country, Gatwick Express, Heathrow Express, Greater Anglia, Great Western Railways, Chiltern Railways, Southern, Thameslink, Virgin Trains, and London Underground have all confirmed that they aren't running.

A free terminal transfer at Heathrow Express service will run on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Anyone wanting to see their family should travel on Christmas Eve, with the following trains still offering trains.

Cross Country

From mid-afternoon, trains will be hourly from Birmingham New Street to Bristol Temple Meads, Reading and Manchester Piccadilly.

Trains will not call at Winchester or Southampton Airport Parkway, and instead rail replacement will be on offer.

Trains will run their last services at 8pm.

Chiltern Railways

A limited Sunday service will run with the last train being between 8pm and 9pm.

Engineering at London Paddington and Reading could mean increase demand and train services are expected to be busy.

East Midlands

A revised Sunday service will run; two trains will run per hour between Nottingham and London St Pancras, and one train per hour will run between Sheffield and London St Pancras.

The last from into London from York will be at 9:25pm, and the last train from London to Derby will be 8:40pm.

Rail replacement will operate between Peterborough and Norwich.

Regional services will shut from 6pm and East Midlands local services after 9pm.

Gatwick Express 

Trains will shut down from 8pm.

Greater Anglia

A revised Sunday service will run with last trains at 10pm.

Great Western Railways

No trains will run to or from London Paddington, with some diverted in London Marylebone.

Trains will not call at Southampton Central.


There will be reduced trains from 7pm.


Services will shut down from 8pm.

Virgin Trains

The last train to Edinburgh will be 6pm, Newcastle at 7pm and to Leeds ay 8:05pm.

The last train from Edinburgh will be at 4:40pm, from Newcastle the last train is 5:49pm and from Leeds is 7:16pm.

London Underground

There will be less frequent services from 8pm.

Circle line is closed between Aldgate and Edgware Road.

District line is closed between South Kensington and Edgware Road/Ealing Broadway, Richmond, Wimbledon, Kensington Olympia.

Piccadilly line trains will call at some District line stations.
